I am a professional writer, now a freelancer, with more than a decade of experience writing speeches for Australian Government ministers. In addition to extensive corporate experience as a writer, I have been working continuously as a freelance arts journalist since 1987.
Since I started out, I have been commissioned to research and write a wide range of creative and corporate communication material. This includes industry case studies, executive speeches and formal proposals, film study guides, magazine feature articles, and special event promotional material.
With my background I have particular expertise to offer the professional in a leadership position who needs a hand to craft a clear and engaging public presentation, with flair. A good speech never goes out of fashion.
While a speechwriter in the Australian Public Service (2002-2012) it was my role to turn policy material into lively and informative everyday language, for the government of the day. It was an entirely specialist role, writing exclusively for portfolio ministers across a diversity of portfolios:
- Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources (included Small Business) 2002-06
- Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry 2006-08
- Australian Tax Office 2008-09
- Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations 2009-11
- Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education 2012
As an Australian Government ministerial speechwriter, I collaborated with content specialists to prepare speeches for every occasion — new policy announcements, peak industry association conferences, visits by foreign dignitaries, launching new enterprise, awarding prizes, and the opening of new facilities and public events.
My experience as a university lecturer has proved useful in running speechwriting workshops for staff.
